07 Aug A Beginner’s Guide to Anti-Networking: 13 Tools & Articles for Building Real Relationships
People Change Everything.
I spend a tremendous amount of time thinking about relationships. I believe there is no more powerful tool for career change, doing work you love or making an impact on the world than the people you surround yourself with.
I call it brainwashing the impossible – the fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around people already doing them.
Without the right supportive and inspiring friends, peers and mentors, even the best career tools on the planet are completely useless.
So over the past couple years at Live Your Legend I’ve made a conscious effort to make sure this is not just a website about the nuts and bolts of discovering passions, finding certain jobs or even starting a business. Sure, we cover all that.
But on a much more fundamental level, Live Your Legend focuses on surrounding yourself with the people who make it possible.
That community is everything.
And I’m not talking about “networking”. That word makes me cringe. It’s not about jamming a business card in someone’s face in some stuffy conference room. Not even close.
It’s about building genuine connections and friendships with people who inspire you – with the people you want to change the world with.
Over the years we’ve created a ton of articles and resources dedicated to building these genuine connections. So today I wanted to put them all in one place.
And if you don’t want to do it alone…
I warn you – there’s a lot of info below. And in the spirit of community, I know some of you might not want to go through it all on your own. If you want company, you might want to have a look at How to Connect with Anyone, our private course and community solely dedicated to surrounding yourself with the people who refuse to let you fail. We even hand-place every member into their own mastermind team of 3-5 people based on common goals, interests and geographic location, so you can start making these connections from day one.
We only open the community to a small number of new members every six months so that we can keep it intimate. If you’re interested in transforming your surroundings with us, you can join our Insider’s list for priority access here.
Now enjoy the goods below…

We Are Our Surroundings
For better or worse, the people around us transform who we are. We can either choose to own our surroundings or we can let our surroundings own us.
The nice thing is that we get to decide. No one can tell us who we can and can’t hang around.
Be intentional about the people you spend time with. And become the person who inspires those around you. Start by taking 20 seconds to forward this list to one person you know needs the support.
It might make all the difference.
Glad we’re in the same corner,
-Scott

Posted at 05:29h, 07 AugustThanks for putting together such a neat list, Scott. Time to go over the articles I’ve missed! This path 7 months have been insane and I can’t believe how much genuine networking has helped me. It’s definitely a skill that can be learned and sharpened. It’s not an exclusive trait for the elite only and you’re proving it right here every day.

Posted at 06:26h, 07 AugustScott,
Fantastic resource you’ve put together here!
My biggest realization these days is how important it is, in this era of online business, to make it a priority to connect with people face-to-face.
Thanks for what you do here.

Posted at 06:50h, 07 AugustHi Scott,
Another great list of resources. Looking at the list I am amazed at how much content you have put out there, but I am not surprised.
I am surprised you didn’t include your 7 Pillars piece from Forbes.

Posted at 11:42h, 07 AugustHi, Scott,
Lots of info! Not enough even the sleepless nights 😀
and “networking”, eh… i’ll tell you a funny story: a group of several people sitting in a class for a info refreshment seminar, all long knowing each other. A coffee break, and I just realize that some of them with their noses deeply in their smartphones, chatting of facebook between each other 😀 from when talking face-to-face became old fashioned? 😀

Posted at 07:46h, 19 AugustI always hated the idea of networking. The idea that you’re going to ingratiate yourself with someone based on what they can do for YOU is all wrong.
Much better idea to build a relationship and whatever ‘flows’ from that just naturally adds to your business or life.
Made some of my best ‘contacts’ this way – just friends helping each other out.
