“The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around people already doing them.”
– The Live Your Legend Local Revolution
Last week, Chelsea and I booked two one-way flights to Buenos Aires.
That was a first for me. And so was the crazy nervous/excited vibration that takes over your body when you tell the United booking agent…
“Yes, I’d like two tickets to Buenos Aires, please. Nope, no return date. Just there.”
And the fact that they were Business Class tickets and we only paid $13.70 each, certainly added to the fun. But we’ll save the travel hacking for a future post. đ
More on all that in a minute.
For now, I’d like to share something very close to my heart and ask you to do two things that will take no longer than five minutes. Then I’ll give you the opportunity to get involved with the LYL revolution in a way like never before – that won’t cost you a dime.
I’m about to share something with you that I’ve never made public on Live Your Legend.
A few of you have seen it in more private settings and some of you were even a part of it happening. I’ve seen it dozens of times and it gives me chills of disbelief every time.
On January 7 of this year, our community did something that’s never been done before. In 150 cities in 48 countries, thousands of you came together in the real world to help each other make your own difference in the world – on the same day.
This was the official launch of our Live Your Legend LOCAL movement and since then, these meetups have been happening every month all across the world, from Kuwait to Kenya and Sydney to San Francisco.
Below you’ll find a 4-minute video montage put together by Troy Young, one of our incredibly talented LYL Local members (who also happens to have just sold his house to travel the world with his wonderful wife Dorene next year, and the next…). We call it The Global Dance Party, as it contains a short clip from each LYL Local group doing a dance that represents what it means to live their own legend and do work they actually care about.
And through those dances, and many attendee and host accounts, it tells the story of why Live Your Legend Local has turned into the most powerful thing we all have ever done together.
Because as we all know by now…
“The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around the people already doing them.”
That is why LYLL exists, and today I’d like you to invite you to become a much bigger part of something we’ve been working like crazy on all year.
I’d like to invite you to become an official LYL Local Host in your city or town.
Being a local host is definitely an important responsibility, and it’s also become a hell of a privilege, as you’ll see in the video below.
Last month, I did 18 one-on-one 45-minute Skype interviews with our most dedicated community members to better understand the future of LYL. Every single one of them said LYL Local had an unbelievably profound impact on their lives. They’d met friends and business partners, written books, quit jobs, started businesses – all as a result of simply having a new supportive environment.
Most of them said it was the most important thing Live Your Legend had ever done.
And the really fun part about all this is that LYL Local is totally FREE to host and to attend – because we believe that connecting with other inspiring, passionate people in the real world is a fundamental human right.
So after hearing so many of you swear by it, my team, the hosts and I put our heads down and have worked our asses off for the past few months to create a totally new and upgraded experience for LYL Local. This includes a new technology platform so hosts and attendees from around the world can better connect both in person and virtually, new host on-boarding and training materials and some sweet new event hosting tools.
You see, we have very, very big plans for what this can become.
My big lifetime vision for Live Your Legend LOCAL is… To have a LYLL community within 20 miles of every city and town in the world so no matter where you are, you always have a local support group of inspiring people – in the real world – to help you find and do work that matters.
And the only way that’s possible is because of YOU.
Thanks to so many of you, that vision is well on its way to becoming reality. Take a look in the Global Dance Party below.
So now, I’d like you to do 3Â things:
Two of them won’t take you more than 4.5 minutes total. And the third might take another five, but will be well worth it.
1. Watch the 4-minute LYL Local Global Dance Party below.
Soak in the power of this community and the even bigger opportunities that are ahead.
Reading this in email? Click here.
2. Leave a comment to tell me how the video made you feel. If you were inspired, tell us. Maybe just say “Inspired!” or “Holy s*&#!” or whatever you happen to feel in the comments. One word is fine. And if you’re in the video, let us know too! Leave a comment here.
We have a very simple application process, and once accepted, you will be welcomed into the LYL Local host family, including access to a private online community where you can connect, learn and share with our hosts across the world. This will also be your tool for managing, hosting and promoting your meetups to your attendees and the rest of the LYL community. For now it’s only available to hosts until we open it to the public in a few weeks.
And to give you a feel for what I’m talking about, here’s a taste of the experience from one of our hosts…
From Matias in Salta, Argentina, on November 20, 2013, when I first invited you all to become hosts…
I’m SO in! haha
I’m afraid LYL, and the community behind it, has become a daily spark in my life. Working with the mastermind group from CWA, watching all the magic in the Creators Guild and seeing people being awesome in the LYL Action Team is something that inspires me to action despite any troubleâŚ
⌠and I can only wonder what happens when you get people in the same room!! I can’t even stay on my seat! Let’s do this!
I only have a question: I’m from Argentina and â as the map shows â there aren’t many LYLers around here, and I’ve been thinking that this whole revolution needs to be spread, if I work on some kind of translation or adaptation of the material to Spanish, would it be OK?
Then, a couple months ago I interviewed Matias after he’d been hosting in Salta for nearly a year…
It’s amazing! I live in a really closed and traditional culture and community in Argentina. When we started, we really thought people were going to think we were crazy. But now after all these months, there’s this community of people doing things differently.
I’ve met more passionate people in eight months than I have before in all my life. And also people that I already know started to talk to me in a different way or about different stuff. It has really made things change.Â
During our call, he also told me about one of his dreams coming true – being invited to give a TEDx Talk. And I’m humbled that he credits part of his success to LYL Local and Connect With Anyone (although he deserves all the credit!).
Then, just yesterday on Facebook, I saw the below picture taken just after Matias stepped off the stage at âTEDxPeatonalAlberdi. Here are Matias and his girlfriend, business partner and LYLL co-host Lucia living the dream…
If you want to Be The Change in your community, click here to apply to become a LYL Local Host
Remember that one-way ticket out of the country that Chelsea and I booked last week?
Well, that will kick off our yearlong world tour on January 10 next year, where we’ll be hosting LYL Local dinner parties in as many LYL Local cities around the world as we can fit into a year.
And on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, we will be hosting our second annual LYL Global Party with meetups across the world all on the same day, just like the video above.
Yes, there is a hell of a party brewing, and all of you are invited. đ
I often refer to our community here as a family.
I hope you’re starting to realize how literally I mean that.
Thanks for being a part of the magic. We’re just getting started…
-Scott

Posted at 08:47h, 04 NovemberHi Scott,
The global dance video is very inspiring.
I live in Bangalore (known as Indiaâs Silicon Valley) home to hundreds of MNCs where a lot of my friends work. Nine out of ten friends that I know are not satisfied with their jobs. Despite this, I noticed that the LYL community in Bangalore has just 10 living legends.
I believe that there is an enormous potential and would like to take the initiative to turn Bangalore into the largest LYL community. In this regard, I would like to know the possible ways to increase awareness and bring people with common interests together to build and work on something that they genuinely love.
Hoping to discuss these issues and the possible solutions with you.
Scott Dinsmore
Posted at 08:59h, 04 NovemberWOW Deepak! What a comment. We’d love to take you up on it. First step is to fill out the host application and then we’ll put you in touch with the other hosts. So excited! Fill that out here: http://liveyourlegendlocal.com/become-the-host/

Posted at 09:13h, 04 NovemberWow! What an honor and a surprise! I hope this leads to a lot more LYL hosts around the world. It´s amazing how much opportunities appear and doors open when we decide to do something about changing our environment. I feel I can´t express how much people I´ve met in the past months. All of them were so close, but we never talked until I decided to step up and do something. Becoming a Live Your Legend Local Host sure takes time and effort, but the rewards are WAY bigger.
By stepping up for what you believe you create a space for others to do the same, and then you can push each other forward. Just meeting once a month with that group makes you start finding new possibilities, smile when things get though and change your idea of what´s normal. Yesterday, after the TEDx Event we got invited to my old University to talk about Superhabitos and I realized how much people need to hear this ideas: that passion and work are not opposite ideas, that there´s more than one way of doing things and that the only thing you need to make all of that possible is to start.
Thanks Scott for stepping up first, and inspiring all of us to do the same. It´s crazy to see a Revolution happening “live” đ

Posted at 09:22h, 04 NovemberAbsolutely LOVE the video! It’s so inspiring to hear from like-minded people around the world! I co-hosted the January 2014 event in Atlanta and we had so much fun meeting amazing people and sharing ideas. We’re very excited about the January 2015 event and hope to see you and Chelsea in Atlanta on your world tour!
Matias, congratulations to you and Lucia for paving the way in Argentina. You’re an inspiration for the rest of us!!

I’m Kajari, a 37-year-old journalist in Calcutta and have been reading on your website nonstop for the past three days. (I have also bought into the Make Your First $1,000 Workshop). Calcutta is full of disgruntled as well as very intelligent people. I would love to be an LYL host here.

Posted at 10:42h, 04 NovemberI watched the video and got chills. My feelings in one word – scared.
I live in Fort Mill, SC, right outside of Charlotte, NC. It looks like the Charlotte LYL group isn’t active anymore. My first thought is that I should sign up to host – but my head is swimming with reason why I can’t. My job… my husband works at night so I can’t attend meetings in the evenings because we have a 7 year old son who has to get ready for school…I’m working on a side biz…I’m ridiculously shy. But I’m so incredibly passionate about showing people they deserve to live the life they want, and helping them find the courage to do it. Definitely need to consider…

Posted at 13:26h, 04 NovemberHi there! I’m very happy that my group in Geneva was partying on January 7 along with the rest of the world, and we’ll be there again.
What I appreciate the most in this community is that there are groups everywhere, and the movement is not that old, so there will be more and more. What I mean is that we often find online communities with mostly people from the USA, or even North America + Europe + Australia… But here, we have more and more groups also from Asia, Africa and South America, and I must say this please my heart very much! I’m very much the kind of humanist and am so happy to find such a worldwide brotherhood movement, for once with no religious background!
Peace!
PS: people around Geneva in Switzerland, please join our Live Your Legend group đ

Posted at 14:21h, 04 NovemberI would like to know if there is already one in the area. Is it tied in to Meetup.com or separate?

Posted at 19:53h, 04 NovemberWe’re rolling out the new platform to all of LYL really soon so right now we can’t point you to a list of cities. But just let us know where you are and we’ll fill you in. And if there isn’t one, we’d love to have you as a host!

Posted at 14:23h, 04 NovemberIncredible. Watching this video showed me not only how far LYL has come, but more importantly, its growth potential. This is a movement that is just at its beginning and that is going to explode in years to come. I’m so excited to become a local host and surround myself with like-minded people.

Posted at 18:18h, 04 NovemberWow Scott – your revolution is HAPPENING! You’ve created something in reality that is impacting so many communities – just awesome and I’m inspired! About to take a look at the next step…. and can’t wait for the workshop on the 13th.

Posted at 18:34h, 04 NovemberHi Scott: I always feel so excited to get your communications via email. Your heart is so kind and caring, and I can FEEL that. The video was inspiring to see because the LYL movement is not only bringing people together for awesome dancing đ but also to create the space to grow together. The world needs Live Your Legend.
After only 2 years as an educator in a public high school, I felt called to get off antidepressants and eventually had a nervous breakdown and quit my job (the degree took me 10 years to earn). The politics, bullying, and apathy took its toll on me as well as the fact that I needed to do some inner child work. Four years later, having enduring a very lengthy dark night of the soul, I am finally doing what I have always dreamed of doing: writing! I am being published for the first time in The Yes Book (Exult Road, Publisher)! I am also working on a book called Divine Prescription, which is an opportunity for me to not only synthesize everything I have learned spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically these last 4 years, but also to share my message with others suffering with anxiety and depression and desiring spiritual recovery. The Prescription is You!
Anyway, I live in a little town called White, Georgia – ain’t nothing here but a Dollar General ;). I know no one like me, although I am attracting people to me who see me as a counselor. I have no peers at my level. Could a writer benefit from a LYL community? I love the idea of surrounding myself with others who are motivated to grow and become the fullest expressions of themselves; I just don’t know if I fit. Do I?
Ivy

Posted at 00:24h, 05 NovemberHi Scott! This is the first time that I’ve actually commented on any of your posts but I’ve been a member of LYL for about 8 months now. I read every fantastic email that you send and I started blogging and joined Fizzle because of your recommendations. I don’t know how big the LYL scene is in New Zealand but I’d love to help out in any way that I can. This really is a worthwhile revolution đ

Posted at 00:25h, 05 NovemberAWESOME video. My eyes welled up a bit on that one…I’ve been on my own, unique path toward my destiny, for about three years now. Granted, I have a typical day job (for the moment), but I am working with all of my heart and every single second I have “off the job” to create the dream I have in my heart. It is slow, but I am making progress, and I am gradually pulling away from the mediocre existence that I once thought I was limited to. The day WILL come when I split from the day job and fully expand into my destiny.
I have nobody that understands my way of thinking, living, doing my own thing, being different, not accepting that the common way of life is correct, not accepting the current culture. I walk alone within my life; I am my only true friend at this point, and I am constantly working toward discovering the person inside that I know I am meant to become, and my passion and vision of what I know I must create and do in life.
I don’t have an amazing, world-changing idea, nor in a field that can make a huge difference, but it is my passion, and I think I can still have a positive impact on people, and leave some type of legacy. I don’t have some crazy new idea on solving hunger, war, coming up with a new technology, or anything like that. I don’t know…I worry that my interests, and what I’m passionate about doing and creating, would not be “worthy” of being part of this community, would not excite other people as it does me.
Ivy
Posted at 07:57h, 05 NovemberHey Matthew,
Just wanted to say that don’t think nobody understands you. Believe me, I do…as do the hundreds maybe even thousands of people out there. We just have to go out and surround ourselves with those people and LYL taught me that and is such a fantastic platform for that. I know what it feels like to feel like no one accepts your way of thinking, dreaming, living. Almost like your dancing alone in a room full of couples waltzing. ‘I am my only true friend at this point.’ I feel like this All the time. But then, just being a part of this community, I realize it doesn’t have to be this way, and I hope you feel that way soon.
Also, personally I don’t think you should worry if your idea isn’t world-changing or cures cancer. As long it’s something that you’re insanely passionate about, something that can have a positive impact on even one person (even if that person is you) your idea and vision are already worthy.
Cheers and Good Luck! đ

Posted at 03:24h, 05 NovemberAbsolutely amazing and inspiring video Scott! It brought tears to my eyes and I am not ashamed to admit it. Making a difference in such a way in the lives of so many people..I have the deepest respect and love for everyone who is involved in this. Wonderful!

Posted at 08:05h, 05 NovemberAMAZING Video! I think more than inspiring, it was exciting! Made me wanna dance đ It’s so up-lifting personally to see all these wonderful people come together and work at their dreams and passions. I can definitely see all those dots covering the entire map very soon.
I think that’s one of the biggest problems the world faces right now. Loneliness. We all want somewhere to belong. Somewhere people will take us for who we are and believe in the things we do, no matter how crazy those things are. And you and your team Scott, have done such a marvellous job at achieving this. You’ve given us somewhere to belong and I can’t thank you enough for it. I’m so glad that I can be a part of this community and revolution. đ

Posted at 12:12h, 11 NovemberI didn’t realize LYL was so widespread to so many cities, I thought it was just an American thing. I was looking up Ted Talks to get inspired and try to find my new direction when I discovered LYL. Its message is the same one that I am trying to embody since I made the decision to make a change. The power of choice is ours.
I live in Dubai and saw it on the video, so maybe there’s a meet-up group here I could meet up with. If not, maybe I could host one.
