Scott had plans to launch the Start a Blog Challenge after our summit up Mount Kilimanjaro. He honestly believed that a blog is hands-down the most powerful passion-discovery and career-transition tool on the planet. I always agreed with him but now this challenge has taken on a whole new meaning for me. I see it as more important than ever before.
Here’s why it was important to Scott…
When he considered everything he’d done over the past decade to learn about himself, build a career and make a difference, nothing was more powerful than his decision to start a blog and adopt a daily writing, reflection and discovery habit.
I’ll never forget the day he made that decision. We were out kayaking in Lake Tahoe talking about what each of us was considering doing next, as we were both at kind of a crossroads and he had just read a book that talked about how you could start a blog with no tech experience.
He mentioned the idea of starting a blog and I encouraged him to take the step of starting one about all the books he read. I even helped to design his first logo, a bookworm. Unfortunately my artistic skills aren’t very advanced so that logo never made it to the internet.
But it was because of this decision on a casual kayak ride that Scott ended up finding his life’s work, building a thriving global business, getting invited to give a TEDx talk that’s gotten over 4.5 million views, launching local LYL communities in 150 cities in 48 countries and getting the chance to have a bigger impact with his work than he ever could have dreamed.
It really all started with his idea to start a blog and develop a routine writing habit.
This topic has become even more important to me lately. As I mentioned in this video that I shared with the community a few weeks ago, the fact that today I have Scott’s words, thoughts, and ideas written down gives me so much comfort during this challenging time.
I honestly believe that he left me with a roadmap to deal with his passing. I have to do the work. I have to redefine the principles that he left and apply them to this situation. But he did leave his words. He did leave his thoughts and in the wake of what happened, I am so proud of him for starting that blog. I am so thankful that he didn’t give up. My life today is better because he took the leap and put his ideas out into the world.
Over the years, those words did touch many others around the world, but even if I was the only one still paying attention, I would be grateful to have his ideas, thoughts and words.
So, while Scott knew and believed that starting a daily writing habit was the best thing you could do for yourself, I now see starting this habit as one of the best things you can do for your loved ones as well.
It gives me comfort and hope to look back through his old posts. At times, I feel like he is talking directly to me. And his guidance and encouragement keeps me going when I feel down.
And as you heard last week, I believe a huge part of discovering who you are comes from what you create, which can be expressed by writing. This is key to discovering yourself. To finding your own unique light.
As Scott once said: “A blog is simply the easiest way to get ideas out of your head and into the world, which then allows you to further develop them and give you a chance to showcase those thoughts as well as your passions and talents to others. And when you do that, interesting things start to happen.”
That’s exactly how LYL came to be. Scott started a blog as a fun experiment. He had no idea what he was doing, but he had ideas he wanted to share. Over time, as his thinking, writing and passions developed, he was able to realize the way he really wanted to help people. And LYL was born.

P.S. Every year thousands of LYLers start blogs and become writers during our challenge, and many of them have told us directly that it is the most game-changing thing they did the whole year. Read on to hear more amazing stories from past challengers or just click here to join us!
Check out what Matias, one of our past participants had to say:
“The Blog Challenge, for me, was the perfect way to stop dreaming about your passions and finally start making them reality. In my case it was the perfect push: when you stop making plans and start doing, the inertia breaks, you start to learn and grow, get a little better each day, and eventually figure things out. That´s how a year later that blog I created during the challenge turned into a real business and got me invited to give a TEDx Talk!”
– Matías S.
As you saw a few weeks ago, Matias now works full-time on his passion-based business, is seen as an expert in his field and has given talks to audiences of over 1,000 people, including speaking at TEDx – a lifetime dream of his. You can read Matias’s full transformation story here.
But this isn’t necessarily about building a business (that’s just where it led Matias) – it’s about discovering who you are and starting to share it with the world.
Here are a few more experiences people shared with us…
“You and your work at LYL is what gave me the courage to start a blog in the first place. Since then, I have fallen in love with my subject matter, and figured out what I want to do with the rest of my life!”
– Bethany S.“Writing has started me on the journey to loving who I am and towards helping others who are sinking in the same seas I’ve survived.”
– Angela Y.“The most powerful result that I have experienced is that I got my courage back. As I sat down and spoke my truth on paper for the first time, I realized that I have something powerful and magical to share with the world that people need to know. With every article, I kept feeling less and less fear to speak my voice from what I know is true.”
