06 Apr The 2016 Start-A-Blog Challenge: Win a $650 Ticket to World Domination Summit + A Very Exciting Announcement!
This past Sunday, April 3, was Scott’s 34th birthday. I spent the day celebrating him in true Scott fashion. He was a man who was not afraid to wear pink and loved nothing more than a good picnic, specifically a picnic that included rosé wine – because there is nothing that says ‘living in the moment’ like sipping rosé in the middle of the day.
So, a group of us got decked out in our best pastels and spent the day at the Palace of Fine Arts, one of his very favorite places in San Francisco. I did everything I could to celebrate him in the way I think he would have wished. I asked people to turn off their phones, we shared our favorite stories and we talked about the things that Scott cared about most…
At the top of the list, were the following things (which should be no surprise):
- Constant learning and growth.
- Getting out of your comfort zone to prove to yourself what you are capable of.
- Surrounding yourself with the people that lift you up and show you what is possible.
I understand those things are topics we constantly talk about at Live Your Legend. But where does one start to turn those words into action?
One Simple Habit Can Change Everything
Scott said over and over that nothing was more powerful in helping him achieve his dreams than one small decision…
Starting a blog and adopting a daily writing, reflection and discovery habit.
Literally, nothing else even came close.
He believed wholeheartedly that a blog is hands-down the most powerful passion-discovery and career-transition tool on the planet.
And guess what? It is something that is not only completely in your control, but it is super easy and it can lead to major growth and incredible opportunities.
This was the path that he took (and over the years, we have seen thousands of others achieve success as well). Because Scott started writing he…
- Began to discover what he actually cared about.
- Began to realize what he was capable of.
- Began to help others by sharing his ideas.
- Turned a hobby into a 6 figure business.
- Built Live Your Legend into a global community.
- Got invited to give a Tedx Talk that has been viewed over 6 million times.
- Created a business that allowed him (and still allows me) to work from anywhere in the world.
All of these unbelievable results started with something so small – the simple habit of writing regularly… It’s no surprise that he was incredibly passionate about this topic!
Writing Creates Opportunity
He believed that writing was the game changer for him, but the thing is… he put it off for years before he started his first blog!
He always encouraged others not to do the same because at some point, if later doesn’t become now, it becomes never. The longer you wait, the closer never becomes.
So, in honor of Scott’s birthday, because he cared deeply about this topic, we are launching the 2016 Start-a-Blog Challenge!
And while this is always an exciting time at LYL, (because we give away tickets to one of our favorite annual events) we have an extra exciting announcement to share with you! But, we’ll get to that in a minute…
First, let’s take a look at what our 2015 challenge winners had to say:
“For someone who is quite shy and English not being my first language, I didn’t think I would be able to complete this challenge. But I did. 🙂 It gives me a kick of positive energy each morning… I’m smiling a lot more and I’m more positive than before. But I think the biggest change is that I let the person I kept inside my own mind out and let her be free, exploring and enjoying things I always loved.” – Grazyna, Paws4Life
“Starting my blog has given me more insight of who I am, what I enjoy most in life and a reason to feel great about myself and life. It has helped me create a path towards happiness and a wider vision towards how I can help others to accomplish their life goals and dreams. By being accountable to “write” it has motivated me to learn. All these things have contributed to inspire me to keep striving to achieve my goals and dreams, dedicate myself to self development and look for the greatness in each moment or interaction. I can see and feel myself becoming alive.” – Kristin, The Hatching Dream
“I was dubious about the value of starting a blog, I did it anyway as part of following Live Your Legend. Much to my surprise I found that it quickly focused my thoughts and made me discover what I was passionate about. The strange thing is that I knew what it was already I just seemed to have forgotten, being too busy living my everyday life to be able to see the bigger picture of my interests. Continuing to write has made me discover more strengths and is helping me get a better idea of what I really should be doing with my life.” – Acb, Planet ACB
Pretty amazing huh?!

A Very Exciting (and Nerve Wracking!) Announcement
As you know, we believe there is no more powerful hack to make your dreams happen then to hang around people already doing them and that is why we every year the winners of our spring challenge receive tickets to World Domination Summit (WDS).
Because WDS is a an event packed with people doing all kinds of different, crazy, inspiring and fun things. It is truly an amazing group of people that are living, breathing proof that anything is possible!
I’ve always loved attending in the past. And I am scared and excited to announce that this year I will be attending in a different way…
I will be one of the main stage speakers at WDS!
Yeah! I mean, yikes! I mean, what?!
But seriously, nerves aside, I am honored beyond belief to have been asked. Scott always dreamed of being a main stage speaker at WDS, so I am humbled and grateful that I’ll get to take the stage to help live out one of his dreams.
So… that is why I am just a little excited to announce this challenge in honor of Scott’s birthday – because it has a double dose of importance this year!

And I have a little secret for you… it’s really not just about the writing. You might find yourself saying “I’m not a writer” or “I don’t plan to be a writer” or “I don’t see how writing will help me.”
But you see, writing is simply a platform and a tool to help you turn what’s swirling around in your head into action. The real benefit is what you learn about yourself through the consistent writing and sharing of your ideas.
Writing to Discover, to Heal, to Help
To be completely honest, writing has taken on a whole new importance for me over the past 6 months.
I always had a journal but I have never considered myself much of a writer. However, I decided to write daily after losing Scott. And I truly think it has been the single most important thing I have done to help me reveal what is going on internally while processing what is happening externally.
It has helped me uncover, discover, organize and process the loss of Scott. It obviously doesn’t change the impact of what happened, because nothing ever will… But it has helped me to understand and move through new, difficult and unexpected emotions with more grace.
However, the greatest benefit in deciding to write down and share my thoughts, is that somehow I’ve been able to help others through the process.
I am still in utter shock when I receive a message or a comment from someone that says my post helped them deal with something in their own life. I honestly can’t believe that something I have to say can actually help someone else… It literally amazes me!
And you don’t have to take my word for it. Every year thousands of LYLers start writing through our challenge and many of them have told us directly that it is the most game-changing thing they did the whole year. Here’s what a few past challengers had to say:
“The most powerful result is how the blogging process has increased my confidence in thinking about problems, concerns and solutions – having to address a topic each week keeps the mind sharp, clear and in tune with my heart and reality.” – Sean H.
“I believe that I’ve come closer to the real me through regular writing on my new blog. Once I’m in the flow of writing a new post, I feel like I’m doing the right thing; learning more about my interests and goals.” – Florian B.
“I have learned that the more I write, the more ideas become available to me. It’s as if a switch has turned on and if I show up, and do the work, every day, then there is always more.” – Frances H.
“The blogging process is a strategy to uncover my ultimate purpose. It forces thoughts to be transformed from air into substance. The mind floats steadily with a stream of ideas. Transcribing them into a form suitable for others to read, one comes to a conclusion about what those thoughts mean. Formerly jumbled ideas now make sense.” – Ilona G.
“I learned that often our core beliefs stop us from doing so many things, fear of failure being number one reason. I am glad I proved myself I could do it and most of all have fun while doing it. It made me feel so alive! I was amazed to find out that people appreciated my blog and I found it very rewarding knowing that complete strangers could relate to the contents and be touched, even if only for a moment. It gave meaning to it and to my life too.” – Kiki G.
The thing is, each and everyone of us has a unique voice, a different perspective and something to offer that only we are capable of giving. And you never know who that might help unless you put it out there…
